Budget Summary Lecture
Guildford Chamber of Commerce - 20th May 2009 - Tony Bennewith

This lecture was fixed at a date well after the Budget was presented, so that we could be more sure of its terms and thought could be given to the way that it could be used in a practical way.

The state of the economy was looked at first, as set out by the Chancellor, which paints a rather unfortunate picture for the next few years.  At the end of that period, the Government’s borrowing will be £1.4 trillion.  (For those who have trouble working it out, a trillion is a one with 12 zeros after it!)

It was suggested that it was not worth carrying out a large tax planning exercise on the new proposals as there is most likely to be a general election before they come into operation.

Income tax was then covered, along with corporation tax and VAT changes as well as many other changes announced in the Budget.

One aspect that was revisited related to the need to consult professional advice on the decision as to whether to draw dividends or salary from a manager owned business.
